Writers' and Artists' Yearbook Competition

Writers' & Artists' Yearbook 2011The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook is one of the 'bibles' for all matters to do with writing. An invaluable source book for listings of magazines, publishers and agents for over 100 years. Each year, it also contains excellent articles and advice from big name authors - from writing a synopsis to the submission letter. There is also a dedicated issue for children's writers.

The publisher, A&C Black, is running a short story competition with the theme of 'compulsion'. Closing date is February 14th and length is 2,000 words maximum. See full details on the Writers' and Artists' website.

Good luck!

Woman Alive

I've decided to make Woman Alive magazine the first marketing post of the new year, since I've been getting this publication for more years than I can remember! I've only had two pieces published in it over the years and I'm always meaning to write some more.

Woman Alive is taglined 'The Magazine for Today's Christian Woman' and that's an accurate description. It's a really interesting magazine, with articles about ordinary women from different Christian denominations, sometimes doing extraordinary things with their lives. They don't shy away from controversial subjects and modern dilemmas and I defy anyone not to be moved by some of the stories, no matter your own beliefs.

The magazine is open to freelance writers and the editor, Jackie Stead, is very approachable. As always, it's best to read a couple of issues before submitting; they cover all sorts of subjects of interest to women, and many freelancers provide profiles and articles about some of the things Christian women are doing around the country (and world). There has been a short story in a couple of recent issues, but this is an experiment at the moment and I'm not sure if it will become a regular feature.

You can find submission guidelines on the Contact page of the Woman Alive website.

Worth checking it out, not least for a good read!

Happy New Year!

Wishing everyone a very happy, healthy and successful New Year.

Thank you for supporting my blog through 2010; I really value all comments and interaction. My aim was always to share writing and market information with as many people as possible. Since writers should also be readers, I'll continue posting occasional reviews of books I've enjoyed, and interviews with other writers.

I collect quotes and sayings and must share the following with you. It was printed on the front of one of my birthday cards a few years ago and seems appropriate for a new year:

'Each day is a new beginning...
another chance to learn more
about ourselves,
to care more about others,
to laugh more than we did,
to accomplish more than we thought we could,
to be more
than we were before.'

I do hope you all find success in 2011, whether published before or just starting out. We're all in it together!
